TV One’s consumer watchdog ’Fair Go’ has illustrated some major concerns with unsafe trailers being sold to unsuspecting Kiwis says Transport Wholesale product manager for light trailer Graham Small.
“In this particular instance we saw trailers that were completely deficient in almost every way. With couplings becoming un-hitched, wheels coming off due to hubs breaking off at the boss, suspension rocker arms not working, and structural steel that was too light for the application. Even safety chains were breaking after the failure of the coupling. Basically what we had here was travelling death traps“ says Graham.
“The message we really want to get across, and I’m sure fellow trailer parts professionals agree, is that you should never take shortcuts with the quality and capabilities of your trailer“ says Graham. “Always go to a trusted and quality source for your trailer parts, equipment and accessories. As specialists we stake our reputation on the quality of our parts, service and advice. We’re both morally, conscienciously obligated to the safety of Kiwi trailer users and other users of our roadways.
“While some might hide behind the anonymity of the internet, we’re a nationwide dedicated trailer parts business, our future and professional reputation is relient on providing equipment that performs. As was the case on ’Fair Go’, when things went wrong there was little or no help for the customer. Shortcuts can end up costing you more, and even worse end with someone being hurt.“
“Trailers are towed at reasonable speeds on our streets and highways – they’re a danger to all others on the road if they are not road-worthy. Trailers are also used to transport some of your most valuable assets. Caravans, horse floats, equipment cartage and boat trailers are all examples where valuable assets should not be compromised by dangerous trailers“.
To this end Transport Wholesale has maintained its own quality trailer brand VIKING available from its 18 branches nationwide. “You will not find any low quality products within this range“ says Graham. “You can buy cheaper couplings but is it worth it?“
Thanks to ’Fair Go’ this particular supplier appears to be out of business, but there is likely many more dodgy outfits out there with increasing sales via the internet.
